Star Refrigeration picked up the prestigious 'Award for Best Ecological Product' at this years's Building Better Healthcare Awards which was held at The Brewery, London, on November 12th 2009. The event celebrates and rewards the best healthcare building project, product design and estates & facilities management with one ultimate goal - to improve the patient experience.

Star beat off competition from amongst other, Dyson, to claim the 'Best Ecological Product' for its ammonia chiller installation at Great Ormond Street Hospital. Two off 1250kW water cooled ammmonia chillers provide +6°C chilled water for the hospital's cooling system and waste heat from the chillers is reclaimed for the heating system.

On receiving the award, Dave Pearson, Director of Innovation commented "Having the vision to purchase a system with a 20-year life would take fantastic vision in itself, but picking one using a natural refrigerant is even more ecologically aware. GOSH will reap the benefits of lower energy costs and a reduced carbon footprint during the plants operational life".

Contractor of the Year award

Star Refrigeration picked up the prestigious 'Contractor of the Year Award' at the RAC Cooling Industry Awards 2009. Beating stiff competition from Honeywell and Johnson controls, Star picked up the award for the ultimate team prize.

The awards were held at the Hilton Hotel, Park Lane and were attended by suppliers, contractors and end users from the refrigeration and cooling industry. Collecting the award for Star Refrigeration was Sales Director, Rob Lamb who commented "This award recognises the tireless efforts of our staff who continuously strive to develop and deliver high efficiency, low life cycle cost cooling solutions to our customers"

The judges praised Star's new initiatives over the past 12 months ranging from on-line CO2 and F-Gas training, through to the development of a range of packaged ammonia chillers. Star's work in the development of CO2 technology for retail and freezing applications was also recognised with this award.

Star were highly commended for their collaberation with Tesco in the development of standard trans-critical CO2 systems for retail applications and Star Learning Solutions received the same commendation for what the judges described as "a flexible alternative to the conventional route to City & Guilds 2079 F-Gas assessment".

Star Refrigeration has recently completed a project to boost capacity and reduce energy costs for Blackburn based brewer, Daniel Thwaites.

Following previous successful projects replacing heat exchangers and separator vessels, Star replaced an existing reciprocating compressor and added additional plate heat exchanger cassettes to a modular cooling plant. This increased capacity from 310kW to 400kW and reduced weekly running costs. This nett effect is a return on investment of less than 18 months.
