Star Technical Solutions

Star Refrigeration Ltd is a privately owned business founded in 1970 with locations across the UK and overseas.  Star Technical Solutions (STS) is a team of refrigeration specialists within the Star Refrigeration group who provide a technical advisory service to clients on all aspects of industrial and commercial refrigeration including regulatory compliance, plant efficiency and design.

The Role

Working as part of a team of consultants, the duties within the role are broad and include a range of different responsibilities.  Training will be provided to the successful candidate on areas of work that are covered by Star Technical Solutions.


Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Feasibility Studies and Preparation of Technical Specifications
Understand customer needs and requirements for new refrigeration plant, investigate and take into account customer budget expectations,  present options within a Feasibility Study for new equipment and assist in the decision making process prior to going out to tender.
Once customer needs are confirmed, prepare detailed Technical Specifications for refrigeration or heat pump plant and assist customer in the tendering process.
  • Load Assessment and Energy Surveys
Conduct site surveys at customer locations and where required, install monitoring equipment to obtain data to provide load assessment and energy usage information.  Based on data obtained, conduct analysis and provide detailed reports with guidance and recommendations for more efficient operations, plant improvements or new plant.
Your role will include attending the customer sites to determine what information is currently available, what additional information would be required and arrange for installation of temporary monitoring equipment to obtain data required for analysis and reports.
  • Pressure system inspections on refrigeration equipment to PSSR and PUWER
Preparing Written Schemes and carrying out inspections to legislation requirements is a key aspect of keeping refrigeration pressure systems from harming persons and property.
Your role will include visiting sites to conduct pressure system integrity inspections in line with the written schemes of examinations and completing documentation. You may identify further inspection requirements resulting in you quoting and co-ordinating further works.
  • Refrigerant Hazard Assessment
For the preparation of refrigeration hazard assessments, detailed knowledge of legislation, refrigeration safety standards and guidance is required. To carry out these assessments template documentation and calculation tools will be provided.
Whilst on site, you will be verifying the refrigeration hardware safety systems and site layout are appropriate, reviewing the clients own procedures in managing site. Where gaps are identified you will identify actions the client must take and this may include quoting and preparing emergency response plans and site inductions.
  • Travel
Most site visits can be attended on the same day so you will travel in the morning and return home once finished. On occasion there will be a requirement where you will need to stay overnight. This will be planned in advance and expenses generated through travel are reimbursed.
While the majority of STS focus is UK based, on occasion events and projects require travel out with the UK so a valid passport is required.

The Candidate

The successful candidate should have
  • NVQ Level 3 in refrigeration or HNC in engineering
  • Good technical understanding of all aspects of industrial and commercial refrigeration system design and operation
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills. You will be interfacing with multiple external clients and internal colleagues on a daily basis to complete your work
  • Manage and co-ordinate own work load
  • Strong report writing skills
  • Full UK Driving Licence
