“The engineers and my mentor always take the time to explain things properly.”

Ben Hinks, Apprentice Refrigeration Engineer

Ben joined Star Refrigeration as an industrial refrigeration apprentice after choosing a hands-on career that offered strong technical skills and real-world experience. Alongside college study, Ben supports experienced engineers on site, assisting with service and maintenance work, carrying out equipment checks, and developing an understanding of how complex refrigeration systems operate. With a structured training programme and strong support from mentors and colleagues, the apprenticeship has helped Ben build confidence while laying the foundations for a long-term career in industrial refrigeration engineering.

What made you apply for an apprenticeship in industrial refrigeration?

I wanted a hands-on career with strong technical skills, and industrial refrigeration stood out because it’s specialised, in high demand, and gives me the chance
to learn while working on real systems.

“A hands-on career with strong technical skills — and the chance to learn on real systems.”

What does a typical day look like for you now as an apprentice?

Most days involve supporting engineers on site, helping with service and maintenance, carrying out checks on equipment, learning how different systems work,
and asking questions to build my knowledge. Every day is different.

What parts of the apprenticeship have you enjoyed most so far?

I’ve really enjoyed the practical side of the apprenticeship — working on large refrigeration equipment while learning from skilled engineers.
I’m also building my own technical abilities and confidence as I understand more of how everything works.

“Working alongside skilled engineers has helped me build confidence quickly.”

How does the college side of the apprenticeship work, and how do you balance college with site work?

I attend college on set days, and the rest of the time I’m out on site. The schedule is well-structured, so I can focus on theory at college and then apply what I
learn when I’m working.

What kind of support do you get from the other engineers and your mentor?

The engineers and my mentor are always willing to explain things, show me the correct methods, and give advice. They guide me without rushing me and make sure
I understand what I’m doing. I couldn’t have asked for a better group.

What advice would you give to someone who’s thinking about applying for an apprenticeship but isn’t sure if it’s for them?

Give it a go — you learn real skills, earn while you train, and get great support. If you enjoy practical work and want a solid career path,
an apprenticeship at Star Refrigeration is a brilliant option.
