Can you tell us about your role as a Software Developer at Star Data Analytics?

As a software developer at Star Data Analytics, I work on both in-house and off-the-shelf software across the full stack, aimed at helping customers process and visualize their data. This capability provides valuable insights for running their cold stores at optimal efficiency. My responsibilities also involve maintaining our data sources remotely at customer sites to ensure consistent logging, as well as developing internal software tools to streamline our processes.

What drew you to software development, and how did you begin your career in this field?

I’ve always had a passion for problem-solving, especially with video games that feature challenging puzzles. I was also intrigued by the concept of tackling the ‘impossible,’ which is reflected in my hobbies like skateboarding and rock climbing. Until my mum suggested I explore computing—given my love for challenges and time spent on my computer—I wasn’t sure what to pursue. After speaking with my guidance teacher, I switched an art class to computing, and as soon as I tried basic programming, I knew this path was right for me. I started my career developing business software solutions, focusing on integrations between various e-commerce platforms to help customers centralize their operations.

How did you come to join Star Data Analytics, and what made you choose to work for Star?

I was feeling unfulfilled at my previous job, where I felt restricted in my ability to work creatively and deliver quality software. I was looking for a more industrial-focused role that welcomed change and utilized the latest software development tools and technologies. Additionally, I wanted to be part of a company that values employee development as much as the quality of work they provide. During my interviews with John Clark, the director of Star Data Analytics, it became clear that this was the right fit.

What’s been the most interesting or challenging project you’ve worked on so far?

It might sound funny, but the most interesting project is usually the one I’m currently working on! My team encourages skill development, and my manager provides guidance, allowing me to experiment with new tools and features on each new project. Transitioning from independent learning to professional implementation in the domain of data processing and analysis for cold store supply chains is always exciting as it allows me to understand where best practices may need adjusted to fit the use case in this domain.

How do the projects you work on impact the business and the customers of Star Refrigeration?

The projects I work on are crucial for gathering data from our customers’ cold store refrigeration systems and helping them gain valuable insights through visualizations of their data. This enables customers to operate more efficiently and make quick, informed decisions to optimize their cold stores, ultimately reducing their carbon footprint and energy costs. Additionally, each completed project offers us insights on how to improve our internal processes, development operations, and identify new learning opportunities.

How has Star Data Analytics supported your growth as a developer?

Star Data Analytics has fostered my growth as a developer more than any other environment I’ve been in. My manager and teammates consistently recognize my improvements and provide constructive feedback, boosting my confidence and helping me identify areas for further development. The team’s positive attitude inspires me to find better solutions for my weaknesses, allowing me to contribute to high-quality software. I couldn’t imagine a better place to achieve my aspirations as a developer, with the level of autonomy, freedom, and encouragement here representing the biggest leap in my career so far.

What are your thoughts on the role of AI in the refrigeration industry—are there any exciting possibilities you see on the horizon?

My perspective on AI in the refrigeration industry, like any modern field, is that companies need to leverage it or risk being left behind. Our team specializes in gathering data and interpreting information from it. This involves processing vast amounts of data that is collected daily and stored indefinitely. Utilizing advanced AI techniques, such as machine learning, on this data allows us to deliver value that wouldn’t be possible through manual analysis.

What are your future aspirations as a software developer?

My main goal as a developer is to keep improving my skills through independent learning and collaboration with my teammates. I genuinely enjoy those moments when we come together to share knowledge; it’s the most rewarding part of my job. When we work together, we can give each other constructive feedback in a positive way, which really helps us come up with the best possible solutions. For me, finding that optimal solution is key, and doing so in a supportive environment adds even more value to my work. I’m really looking forward to tackling new challenges as a team because I know that together, we can innovate and stay ahead in our field. Ultimately, the journey of growing and achieving great results as a group is what excites me the most about my future as a developer.
