“The main thing that stands out to me is the culture…It was clear what a close knit community the Star staff are and how close the branches are.”

Mehreen Ahmed, Finance Graduate

What is your education background?

Accountancy at Glasgow Caledonian University

How did you start working at Star? / What brought you to Star?

I seen the opportunity through my university and felt it was a good fit. As it was during a pandemic and Star were still recruiting I knew it would be a good company.

What benefits have you found from your intern placement?

My placement has given me valuable real life experience. I have seen first-hand how a real life business functions. Seeing all the behind the scenes of a finance department and how to make things run smoothly.

What does your current role involve?

I am documenting the finance team’s procedures; spending time alongside each team member and gathering notes to create a document with all the procedures in one place. Then carrying out analysis on these and looking to streamline to processes.

What do you enjoy most about what you have been working on, and what are the biggest challenges you face?

I have enjoyed being able to work with each member of the finance department, it’s been a great ice breaker.
What I have found most challenging is the knowledge gap- I am new to finance and the team have a great knowledge some with 38 years’ experience. Also, working from home makes communication harder; if I were in the office I could ask questions easily or could find the answers more organically than having to email.

How have you found the transition from studying to working as part of a Finance team (also working remotely)

“Seeing the benefit of working your way up in a team and how much knowledge you gain but also the contribution they have made to Star has really influenced this.”

How long have you been working for Star? What do you like about working for the company?

I joined star on 3rd of August, my placement was initially for 12 weeks however, it has been extended to mid-December. The main thing that stands out to me is the culture, especially after the 50th birthday celebration. It was clear what a close knit community the Star staff are and how close the branches are. At the 50th birthday event I got to meet people from Manchester and Derby and it was a really great experience.

What type of role are you looking to develop into in future?

Previously, when I graduated I wanted to work for an accountancy firm. However, due to my placement at Star, I now want to work in an industry and work my way up to finance manager. Seeing the benefit of working your way up in a team and how much knowledge you gain but also the contribution they have made to Star has really influenced this.
