Star Technical Solutions (STS), the technical advisory service of Star Refrigeration, has had its busiest six months of business since it was set up in 2005.
Of particular note in this period has been a number of projects assisting UK and international clients in the often tricky challenge of planning for and implementing R22 phase out.
For many, this legislative requirement - driven by the 1987 Montreal Protocol on stratospheric ozone depletion - is not, at first review, adding any value to their business. Rather, it often appears as a requirement to replace existing, satisfactorily operating refrigeration systems with new ones, without a compensatory benefit.
In working with its clients' engineering teams, STS sees a key part of its role as identifying and delivering solutions that minimise the capital cost impact of new plant, whilst also significantly reducing its operational costs, particularly by improving energy efficiency. In many cases, the energy usage of new systems can be reduced by 30% to 50% - in comparison with the existing - by utilisation of new technologies and implementation of improved control strategies.
