Following recent global developments on the environmental and political landscape, the CIBSE-ASHRAE Group webinar will shed light on the implications these bring for refrigeration system designers, owners and operators.

Past IoR President and regular ASHRAE Journal columnist Andy Pearson of Star Refrigeration will provide the background to refrigerant choices with a brief overview of ozone and climate change issues and comment on the practical implications of this shift for system designers owners and operators. The webinar hosted by Star Refrigeration and supported by Institute of Refrigeration will take place on 15th February, 6pm -7pm.

He will reflect on European f-gas regulation development and its implications and the UNEP efforts to restrict HFCs under the Montreal and Kyoto protocols. He will specifically consider the effect of the very recent Kigali agreement that aims to significantly reduce the worldwide use of HFCs being that HFC gases are thousands of times more destructive to the climate than carbon dioxide as well as the potential effects of Brexit – on regulations, on European standards and others.

He will discuss the likely consequences on the future choices for refrigerants in building systems in light of the recent shifts in the political landscape on both sides of the Atlantic.

Andy is a past President of the Institute of Refrigeration and has served two terms as a director of the International Institute of Ammonia Refrigeration and is a member of the Refrigeration Safety Technical Committees for the British Standards Institute (BSI), the European Committee for Standardisation (CEN) and the International Standards Organisation (ISO). His principal interests are in the design of more efficient refrigeration systems and troubleshooting of faulty, inefficient or unreliable equipment. He also has a wide experience of safety issues related to ammonia and carbon dioxide systems.

Andy is Fellow of Institute of Refrigeration, Fellow of Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Fellow of ASHRAE, Fellow of Institution of Engineers and Shipbuilders in Scotland and a Chartered Engineer.
