Scotty reckoned he could manage the job in nine pours by filling and emptying pails, but he still wanted to get to half of Jim’s estimated figure, so he thought a bit harder. His original solution is shown below.
- Fill the 5 litre pail from the 8 litre pail
- Fill the 3 litre pail from the 5 litre pail
- Pour the 3 litre pail into the 8 litre pail
- Pour the 5 litre pail into the 3 litre pail
- Fill the 5 litre pail from the 8 litre pail
- Fill the 3 litre pail from the 5 litre pail
- Pour the 5 litre pail into compressor 1
- Pour the 3 litre pail into compressor 2
- Pour the 8 litre pail into compressor 2
