Star Refrigeration Apprentice Shortlisted as a Finalist for the ACR Trainee of the Year Awards
Star Refrigeration’s Operations Group apprentice nominated for prestigious award after impressing management and customers.
A young refrigeration apprentice from Sunderland has beaten a number of nationwide applicants to be shortlisted for the ACR Apprentice of the Year. Sam Gills, who has been described by colleagues as a very talented trainee engineer, was nominated for the award and has been shortlisted along with nine other apprentices from across the UK. The Awards Ceremony takes place on 7th December 2017 at the Belfry in Sutton Coldfield, and Star will be supporting Sam at the anticipated event.
Dave Bartlett, Star Operations Training Manager, nominated Sam for the prestigious award after he impressed site managers on a number of contracts, his course provider and individual customers. He said, “ We’re so pleased that Sam Gills has been named as a finalist for the ACR Trainee of the Year 2017, and we’re really looking forward to attending the dinner and awards ceremony. ‘Tomorrow’s engineers’ don’t often get recognised but Sam has proved time and time again that he is a hardworking trainee engineer with a promising career ahead of him. We wish him luck and are delighted that he has received this acknowledgment for his hard work and commitment”.
The budding apprentice has recently finished his BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Engineering and thanks to dedication, hard work and commitment, he achieved a Double Grade Distinction attaining 11 Distinctions in 11 topics. He is currently halfway through completing a four year apprenticeship with Star Refrigeration and was identified as an exceptional individual and a worthy nominee. He is described as a reliable, dedicated and hardworking apprentice who is well liked by colleagues, management and customers on site.
Andrew Murrell, a Site Manager who has been working for Star for 30 years commented, “Throughout my long time with Star, on limited occasions, I have spotted and identified talented young engineers at such an early stage in their career, who have then gone on and risen through the ranks very quickly and reached very important positions within our company. Sam Gills is definitely one of these special individuals. For his very young age and the short time he has been in this industry, from what I have seen, he will never fail to rise up to any challenge and will one day hold a position that reflects his incredible capabilities.”
The ACR Trainee of the Year Awards is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the skills and commitment of trainees and apprentices in the refrigeration and air conditioning industry. It is a popular event which includes a drinks reception, a three course dinner and entertainment.
Sam Gills, Apprentice Trainee at Star Refrigeration Operations Group – Newcastle, said, “To have been selected as a finalist for the awards is such a humbling experience. I am so grateful to my mentors and colleagues at Star who have dedicated so much time and effort to my training and development and have given me complete support throughout my apprenticeship.
I’ve taken the opportunity of working with first class engineers to improve my skills and acquire new ones which has also helped me grow in confidence. I look forward to getting involved in new projects and future challenges and can’t wait to qualify as an industrial refrigeration engineer. I will strive to become the best engineer I can be.”
Star Refrigeration staff will be supporting Sam at the Awards’ dinner.
All the money raised by the awards is reinvested into the future of the industry, and grants are awarded to colleges and training centres to ensure they can continue to provide high quality hands-on engineering courses.
