What does the industrial fridge of the future look like? Low charge ammonia package systems were presented as the safe and natural choice for the future at the 19th European Cold Chain Conference in Amsterdam on 6-8 March 2016.

Star Refrigeration contributed to the educational program of the 19th European Cold Chain Conference which focused on cutting-edge solutions and innovative approaches to cold chain management. The event is hosted by The Global Cold Chain Alliance (GCCA) and brought together over 100 high level professionals representing the temperature controlled supply chain industry, including cold storage, transportation, logistics, distribution and construction.

Attendees were given an overview of the most recent research published in refrigeration technology, showing the cost and efficiency advantages of using air cooled systems instead of evaporative condensers – as well as the incredible developments in low charge ammonia packaged systems, which require only a fraction of the refrigerant charge associated with traditional refrigeration systems.

“The use of ammonia – a naturally occurring refrigerant with zero ozone depletion and global warming potential – offers a wide range of benefits. NH3 is future proof as it will not be phased out by new legislation and offers higher efficiencies than HFCs,” says Aiden Perks, Business Development Manager (South East UK) of Star Refrigeration.

A recent announcement by standards organisation EUROVENT estimated that about 90% of the chillers above 400KW which are currently placed in the market will not meet the Ecodesign Directive targets for 2019. Increasing European regulation and the ongoing commitment to improve energy efficiency and cut carbon emissions could present opportunities for both manufacturers and end users.

Perks says, “While manufacturers will have to put their thinking hats on and speed up the rate at which energy efficiency upgrades to inefficient industrial cooling systems are carried out, industrial refrigeration end-users will benefit from higher quality equipment and more efficient solutions which will result in reduced energy bills and greenhouse emissions.”

“At Star we place the design and development stages at the heart of the manufacturing process and this commitment is what has enabled us to raise the bar in chiller efficiency by eliminating sources of energy waste and enhancing performance.”

Star has re-engineered its Azanechiller range to help customers reduce energy costs, avoid the uncertainty of synthetic F-Gas refrigerants, reduce ammonia charge for increased safety and invest in a futureproof solution that the company says will deliver reliable cooling for more than 20 years.

The Azanechiller’s headline seasonal efficiency figures are 50% higher than the EU’s Eco-Design Directive requirement.
