Sophie Hoggan
"I feel grateful to be given the opportunity to really challenge myself and be part of a great team which give support and guidance with my endless questions.”

Sophie Hoggan, Design Engineer

Sophie studied Product Design with Mechanical Engineering and then went on to gain Chartership with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers in 2018. She has been a design engineer with Star since 2019 at our Thornliebank branch.

What is your role within Star? How long have you been with the company?

I am one of the Design Engineers here at Thornliebank and have been working with Star for 10 months.

Where did you study and what qualifications did you gain?

I studied Product Design with Mechanical Engineering and the University of Glasgow and Glasgow School of Art. In 2018 I gained my Engineering Chartership with the Institute of Mechanical Engineers which I am very proud to achieve.

What attracted you to the industry?

I have always been a very hands-on and creative person. I am fascinated by how things work and how engineering feats have changed the world. My dad has been an engineer for years and although I didn’t realise this would be the path I would take, I am grateful he encouraged me to open my eyes to how engineering is such an interesting and exciting industry.  It’s definitely in my DNA!

What do you specialise in now? What type of projects do you work on?

As I am just beginning my journey in the refrigeration industry I would not say I am a “specialist” in anything but keen to learn all I can. I find that each element of design plays a key role and there is huge potential in the refrigeration industry that I look forward to being a part of.

What do you enjoy most about your job, and what are the biggest challenges you face?

Production! I love working on drawings and constructing a system together then seeing it come to life in the factory. The physical system which makes the whole thing possible.

What would you say to other women who are considering coming into the ACR industry?

Get stuck in! Be enthusiastic and curious.

“The diversity in work is huge and I feel proud to be one of the design engineers working to achieve that.”

What do you like about working for Star?

The think I like most about working at Star is that they encompass the whole refrigeration system; from the valves we use, the application, the build and the final installation.

Where do you see your career developing?

I hope my career will develop into becoming a competent engineer in the field of refrigeration and work on new technologies.

What are the challenges of this industry?

Having worked in very different engineering disciplines I find the challenges are getting to grips with all the components of what is a complicated industry. It’s not a case of just building a refrigeration unit but the logistics of integrating it with real applications and don’t get me started on the chemical side!

    Any general career highlights?

Working at Star has definitely been a career highlight for me – cheesy as that sounds! I feel grateful to be given the opportunity to really challenge myself and be part of a great team which give support and guidance with my endless questions.
