Ammonia Awareness Training

This course is aimed at management, supervisors and persons entering or working near the
ammonia machinery room.

The following topics are covered during a one day session:

• Ammonia as a refrigerant
• Positive / negative attributes
• What ammonia smells like
• Characteristics of ammonia (Identification, Toxicity & Flammability)
• Leakage types
• Effects of ammonia – people and environment
• Classification of areas
• Ventilation requirements – Discuss about the ventilation systems on your site
• Safety and alarm systems in ammonia containing areas – Discuss about the systems on
your site
• Safe dispersal of Ammonia – The systems on your site
• What to do in the event of an ammonia leak (Emergency Response Plan) – Discuss your
• Personal Protective Equipment Requirements
• Overview of Standards, Regulations & Industry Guidelines
• Dangerous Substances & Explosive Atmospheres Regulations
• Pressure System Safety Regulations
• Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations
• Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations
• Industry guidelines – EN378

The training course typically lasts for 6 hours and will be held at your site. A meeting room with a projector or large screen TV will be required. The number of participants will depend on the size of the room, but up to 10 people can be accommodated in a reasonably sized room with the correct layout.

A certificate for attendees will be issued on completion of the courses with a copy of the course
