Eleanor Ford, Maintenance Manager

After finishing her A-Levels, Eleanor applied for a level 2 apprenticeship in Business and Administration at Star Refrigeration. After completing her apprenticeship she was offered a full time role and has progressed through the business, working as a Service Controller and progressing to Maintenance Manager at Star's Manchester Branch.

How did you start working for Star?

I’d completed my AS Levels at Sixth Form College but I was keen to start working and I knew an apprenticeship was the way to go. I applied at the nearest training centre an enrolled for Level 2 apprenticeship in Business & Administration.

What attracted you to the refrigeration industry and to Star in particular?

I was attracted to the job at Star as the role was based in a completely different sector to the rest of other jobs. I also liked the idea of working for a family business known for its values.

Describe your apprenticeship experience with Star?

From the very beginning Star have been so supportive, from having dedicated study days to internal support & guidance from colleagues.

Did you do any further studying after your initial apprenticeship/qualification?

Following the completion of my Level 2 I continued to complete my Level 3 in Business Administration. Once I completed my level 3 I was offered a permanent full time role in the Manchester branch. I then undertook a HNC in Business Administration, I attended college weekly and Star supported me 100%. Throughout my 10 years at Star I have also received internal & external training, in the form of finance and various health & safety based courses.

What is your current role?

I am Maintenance Manager for the Manchester branch.

How did you progress into your current role? Has this particular career progression been a long term goal?

In the 10 years of being at Star I’ve been involved in various aspects of the branch operations, starting as an apprentice, to branch administrator then onto Service Controller. The engineers, management & star’s online learning platform have provided me with a foundation for my current role, and I look forward to continuing my development with Star.

Any general career highlights?

I think being given the opportunity to work with a host of different customers from various sectors. Coming into my new role one of my key focuses is to maximise our customers plant through effective maintenance so they can run at its most efficient and to maximise their performance.

What advice would you give to young people who are just starting a similar career path to yours?
