Star Refrigeration supports National Women in Engineering Day with industry wide social media competition
A photo and video competition hosted by the UK’s largest independent cooling contractor Star Refrigeration hopes to encourage future female engineers into the Refrigeration, Air Conditioning and Heat Pump (RACHP) industries.
At only 9%, the UK currently has the lowest percentage of female engineers in the whole of Europe, and the number of young women studying engineering and physics at University has remained virtually static since 2012.
“There is certainly no shortage of exciting and rewarding opportunities in the industry for women, but a lot of women just don’t know they’re out there,” said Star Refrigeration Marketing Manager, Astrid Prado.
Star’s campaign hopes to dispel the myth that engineering is a ‘one size fits all’ career, and instead to highlight how getting involved with RACHP engineering allows you the possibility to shape and enhance the modern world.
Star engineer Sarah Patrick, who appeared in the ACR Journal’s ‘Women in Engineering’ feature, has had the opportunity to help bring to life exciting projects such as Star’s award winning district heat pump in Drammen, Norway.
Speaking about her favourite part of the job, Sarah said: “You get to see how all sorts of things are made, and doing industrial refrigeration you can end up in very unusual places. I’ve seen how everything from chocolate to cling-film to gold gets processed. It’s good for not getting bored.”
With the #CoolCareers campaign, Star is inviting everyone in the industry to share what refrigeration means to them by submitting photos (Freeze Frames) or short videos (Cold Cuts) of cool people, places and career highlights that warm their heart to Twitter or Instagram with the hashtag #CoolCareers.
“We’re enlisting the help of everyone in the industry to create awareness of what we do in a fun and current way, in the form of a photo contest on social media,” Astrid Prado explained.
The contest will run until 6th
October and the winning submission will be announced on 16th
October, with the winner receiving an iWatch.
