Star has completed an R22 phase out and cooling equipment upgrade project for the UK’s largest catering butcher, Fairfax Meadow. Fairfax Meadow specialises in producing high quality chilled raw meat for the restaurant and food service trade. The company was recently looking to replace an ageing refrigeration plant at its processing facility in Derby.

The existing plant ran on R22, an HCFC refrigerant currently being phased out by European legislation. The plant was also proving unreliable in operation, with high maintenance and running costs.

Star took on the role of main contractor for the Fairfax Meadow project, with Star Technical Solutions (STS) acting as CDM co-ordinator and Star M&E Solutions (SMES) carrying out all electrical work and mains wiring.

Star was responsible for removing the existing R22 plant, as well as designing, supplying, installing and commissioning the new refrigeration system. A carefully phased site programme ensured no disruption to production or loss of cooling within the fully operational facility.

Star’s bespoke R404A direct expansion refrigeration system provides 305kW of energy efficient cooling to eight chill rooms and a 40m x 15m temperature controlled production hall. The plant’s condensing units are located on a new concrete plinth adjacent to the production hall at the Fairfax Meadow site.

The new refrigeration plant is designed for efficient, reliable, low maintenance operation to significantly reduce life-cycle running costs. The cooling system provides accurate temperature control within the Fairfax Meadow facility.
